While he remains best known as Led Zeppelin’s frontman, Robert Plant’s solo career is a fascinating journey spanning country, folk, blues and Americana. He returns with his latest solo project, ‘Saving Grace’, another late career highlight and eclectic blend of covers, showing that even at 77 he’s continuing to push forward.
Opening with the blues staple Chevrolet, it recalls his work with Alison Krauss on 2007’s ‘Raising Sand’, from its instrumentation to its vocal harmonies with Suzi Dian, a co-collaborator across this record. As I Roved Out is built around this interplay initially before following the title’s prompt, incorporating a range of styles across six minutes as it builds to its crescendo.
Plants riff on The Low Anthem’s Ticket Taker is another beautiful harmony-led track — it may be simple but there is so much joy in hearing Plant in his element, helping to promote a new talent and he is every bit as hungry as he was in the late 60s.
It’s a Beautiful Day, originally by Moby Grape, has more of a soft country flavour to it. Again, some heavenly harmonies carry the song with Plant allowing Dian to step into the spotlight. Soul of a Man takes the blues classic by Blind Willie Johnson and lends it more of a bluegrass feel. As with other tracks on the album, Plant’s version feels fresh and brings a unique vision.
‘Saving Grace’ finds Plant in a reflective mode but, bolstered by exciting collaborators, he sound as vibrant as ever. He injects several tried and tested tracks with new life and, hopefully, it’s not the last we hear of Plant and Dian together. Having toured with this band since 2019, there is so much synergy and freedom in their playing and Plant’s voice remains a marvel.
