Geese - Getting Killed (Album Review)

While their breakthrough album ‘3D Country’ was an unhinged, chaotic out of control rodeo, on its follow-up ‘Getting Killed’ Geese have tamed the bull. It’s left to us to decide whether that’s a good thing, and there’s a coin flip in it.

Lead singer Cameron Winter finds himself in a strange position. Critically acclaimed solo album ‘Heavy Metal’ gave him the chance to explore beautiful wisdom-stricken lyrics bellowed over a lone piano. In retrospect, returning to the noisy pastures of Geese seems like a tough task.

But in a well-executed move, the band respect where Cameron is at lyrically and this album is a mixture of ‘3D Country’ and ‘Heavy Metal’. Not a bad bet considering how well-loved the two records are both critically and in the Geese fan base.

For the most part, they take a garage-rock approach, with Alabama Shakes meeting Black Keys’ ‘Brothers’-esque rhythms and riffs. On Islands of Men they decide to ride a groove and build on simplicity rather than bombarding the listener with their abrasive sound.

Accompanied by clean country guitar bends, an Americana twang and quirky percussive choices, the tone is surprisingly peaceful. The closest we get to the established, wholly ungovernable Geese experience is the title track and 100 Horses but even these moments feel self-contained.

On the plus side, it leaves plenty of room for Winter, who shines on the record. Crooning and stumbling through a bittersweet escapade, he’s accompanied by some of his most poignant and heartbreaking lyrics.

After grabbing our attention with the last album, now they’re showing their chops by jamming more nuanced tracks in order to let Winter to strut his stuff. But by gutting the anarchy and unpredictability, the band have perhaps misplaced their most enticing elements.  ‘Getting Killed’ is a solid Geese record but, for a band that thrives on walking the line between chaos and melancholy, is that enough?
