Nils Frahm - Day (Album Review)

Tuesday, 12 March 2024 Written by Milly McMahon

Nils Frahm’s ‘Day’ is a piano record that displays the composer’s ability to wring something introspective and profound from a minimalist’s palette, flowing with the ease of a brook in a tranquil valley.

Made up of six understated, impactful tracks, here the Berlin-based composer melds his playing with sounds that give the songs a contemporaneous feel. Butter Notes winds reflectively, centred around a lullaby-like piano solo, with ambient noise from the outside world echoing in the background. Dogs bark, birds sing and piano pedals creak.

You Name It opens the album as Frahm plays with time, drifting from rousing melodies to quiet, nostalgic spaces, while Tuesdays is a stunning melodic soliloquy of unspoken sadness.

At times reminiscent of the track Re, which was created more than 10 years ago, Frahm’s piano is almost a narrative tool here.

Much can be interpreted from his complex and creative tapestries, with his relationship to his instrument both transportive and grounding, linking back to his childhood while provoking emotional responses in others with just a small sample of keys. Encapsulating a mood that evokes memories of loss and love, his distinctive aesthetic is felt instantaneously on ‘Day’ and, for new listeners and long-term fans alike, there is much to explore.
